Wolfe’s Neck Farm: Camping, Coffee and Cows on Casco Bay

While there are many benefits to life on Cape Cod, the rush of summer traffic is not one of them. As sure as the return of the barn swallows, visitors flock to the beaches and bars of the Cape on the first warm weekend of the year.

As the roads fill up down Cape, I head up the coast. I find it best to keep driving north until I see warning signs for moose crossing the roadway. If you stop sooner, you might have to enjoy all the top hits on rush hour radio.

This year’s first trip to Maine was to a campground just outside Freeport. Most visitors don’t make it too far past the shops and outlets, but after a quick drive down the road you will find Wolfe’s Neck Farm and a close escape from the hectic bustle of town.

The Recompence Shore Campground sits along the Casco Bay waterfront and affords incredible views of the bay and islands. The grounds cover over 600 acres of farmland and forest open for exploration by all ages. The campground has tent sites, RV sites, and a handful of cabins available. The camp store also rents bicycles and watercraft for enjoying both the shore and water around the campground.

My morning’s quick walk toward the camp store for coffee led me right past the farm’s many gardens. The flower beds were full of bright blooms and the gardens of organic vegetables waiting to be harvested. Don’t forget — then again how could you miss the noise? — to swing by the barn. From chickens to cows, the stalls were full of animals to meet up close.

Camping, coffee, and cows — Wolfe’s Neck Farm in Freeport seems to have it all!
